150. CAN WE RAISE QUESTIONS TO RELIGIOUS SCHOLARS?

Certain people, who would say that no one should raise any contradictory question to religious scholars, would substantiate this verse 5:101, in support of their contention.

But this verse only says that questions should not be raised while the Quranic verses were being revealed, the reason ‘why question should not be raised?’ is also revealed.

Certain persons had even asked Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who their parents were. (Refer Bukhari 4621, 4622)

If such questions were asked by a person, he would incur unnecessary mental agony, if the person specified as his father was not the similar person whom he assumed as his parent (father).

That was why it had been banned that no one should raise questions to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) regarding certain matters.

Generally, Quran liberally encourages raising of question to religious scholars. (Refer Quran 16:43 and 21:7)

We can find from the following verses that various questions were raised to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

(Quran 2:189,2:215,2:217,2:219,2:220,2:222,5:4, 8:1, 17:85,18:83,20:105,33:63,. 51:2 and 70:1).
